New Details About the HP Slate

If you're a PC person and you've been thinking about making the switch to Apple because you just can't resist those neat little iPads, wait! Hewlett Packard is coming out with its own version of the tablet computer, called the "Slate." Last week, the computer maker released some details about the new computer. The Slate's screen is going to be smaller and have a lower resolution than the iPad but it has more features - from cameras to Adobe Flash Support.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer first mentioned the device at the January Consumer Electronics Show, but of course the constant talk of Apple's iPad drowned out any hype of what could become the device's biggest competitor. But how does it stack up against it?

For starters, the Slate features two cameras, the iPad does not. One works for things such as video conferencing and the other is a high-resolution, three megapixel camera for taking pictures. There's also the SD card reader that holds up to 128GB, a USB 2.0 port (iPad dosn't offer this), audio and HDMI out. And the slate runs on a 1.6 GHz Atom microprocessor compared to the one-GHz A4 on the iPad.

On the downside, the Slate's screen is smaller - 8.9 inches compared to the iPad's 9.7 inches - and the screen resolution is higher: 1024x600 to the iPad's 1024x768. However, the Slate can run higher-def videos 1080p (iPad only goes up to 720p).

The Slate will run an HP-developed touchscreen interface and Windows 7 Home Premium compared to the iPad, which runs the iPhone operating system. But many industry insiders are saying that the real appeal of the iPad isn't the device itself, but instead, the number of apps you can buy from Apple's app store (over 150,000) and with Apple's new deals in the publishing world, you can now or soon read a number magazines, best-selling books, and comics on the the device.

There's no word as to when the Slate will be released, but it looks like the 32GB model (with Wi-Fi) will sell for about $550 and the 64GB model (also with Wi-Fi) will sell for about $599. The entry-level iPad, which is 16GB (with Wi-Fi) sells for about $499. The 32GB model sells for $599 and the 64GB model sells for $699.

New Toshiba Laptop Has Interesting Features

Some information about a new Toshiba laptop has been leaked and some of the details are pretty interesting. The information, which came from VozExpress, may have you asking yourself if it's all too good to be true!

The new laptop will featured a 512GB solid-state-drive, instead of a 500GB hard drive, which may be one reason the laptop is said to be extremely light. (Rumor has it, it'll weigh about 2.2 pounds, making it one of the world's lightest.) However, the solid-state-drive will probably drive the price up compared to what its counterpart with a hard drive would cost.

It will use standard-voltage Intel Core i3 or i5 processors, which is a big difference compared to most other ultra-portable laptops, that use a low-voltage processor. For this reason, Toshiba has been extremely inventive with its battery...or should I say batteries. The higher-voltage processor would eat up the battery life of a normal battery. But for this computer, in addition to the primary battery, the new laptop will feature a second battery, using Super Charged ion Battery (SCiB) technology.

According to CNET, batteries that use the SCiB technology have the ability to be recharged to 90% in a matter of ten minutes...yes, ten minutes. Many tech experts have been drooling over that information. Imagine, recharging your laptop in less time than it takes to wash a load of dishes or clean out your email inbox. This could mean huge things for the laptop industry and send Toshiba's competitors into panic mode.

In addition to the SCiB technology, the laptop is said to be the first laptop with a "honeycomb rib structure. It will also supposedly feature the new Blaze Mountain CPU cooling. There are no details as to when the 13-inch laptop will be released, or how much it will cost, but you can bet the details have many people waiting impatiently for more.

Thin is In When it Comes to Laptops

According to iSuppli, a market research firm, 2010 will be all about netbooks and ultra-thin laptops. As a matter of fact, even though the market experienced a 19% increase in sales last year (up from 2008), numbers for this year are expected to be even higher. They also expect this trend to carry on for the next four years, into 2014.

Laptops, Ultra-thin laptops, and Netbooks

In 2010, over 34.5 million netbooks are expected to ship (an increase of 30%) and in 2014, those numbers are expected to reach 58.3 million units sold. When it comes to the newer ultra-thin laptops, 14.5 million units are expected to ship this year, which is a 93% increase from the 7.5 million units shipped in 2009. As for standard laptops, they still dominate the market (160.5 million units are expected to ship in 2010), but growth is only about 21%. It's expected that notebooks will continue to dominate the market over the next few years, but thinner versions are definitely on their way up.

Acer is Number One

When it comes to computer-makers, Acer remains number one. The company, based in Taiwan, was at the top in 2008 and 2009, and iSuppli expects that to be the case in 2010. 37% of all laptops shipped last year came from Acer, which drives sales with competitive pricing, strong channel distribution, and quick production to market time. Asustek Computer came in at number, while Hewlett Packard, Samsung, and Dell rounded out the top five. However, the number two spot will potentially see Samsung or HP taking over. Those five companies alone make up 90% of the laptop market.

Another reason for Acer's popularity is it's creation ultra-thin laptops in 2009, something other companies hadn't yet started making. The company shipped around five million ultra-thin laptops in 2009. Asustek shipped about 700,000 ultra-thin unites, and together with Acer, dominated the market. Companies such as HP, Dell, and Toshiba didn't get into the ultra-thin game until late in the year, but they are expected to do so in 2010, which means lots of changes and competition to be number one.

Total Numbers

If iSupply's data is any indication, laptop popularity, as a whole, will continue to grow and dominate the computer market, with more and more people trading in their powerful standard laptops for netbooks and ultra-thing models. Rumor has it some companies, such as Toshiba, will be working to make thinner laptops more powerful.

In 2009, 166.9 laptops were sold. This year, 209.5 unites are expected to sell, with 371.5 units being sold in 2014.

The Sony Dash: True Tablet or Not?

So Sony has decided to dive somewhat into the tablet industry but not completely. The Dash has a tablet-like appearance and many of the same functions, but it is not exactly as portable as tablets like the iPad.

The Sony Dash has a pretty basic structure. It features a seven-inch touchscreen, stereo speakers, a snooze bar/menu button, volume buttons, a USB port, a headphone jack, and of course the power connection cord. The case that encompasses the Dash is made of a rubber-like material that allows you to get a good, secure grip on the device.

The biggest problem that I see with the Dash is the fact that it does not have a battery. This means you can’t just carry the Dash around. You are constricted by the fact that it must be plugged into an outlet. Sony says that there next version of the Dash will have a battery, but that makes me wonder even more why they didn’t just put a battery in the version that is out right now. I feel that having a battery would definitely elevate it to complete tablet status.

So we’ve discussed the external side of the Dash, but what’s exactly inside of the device? The Dash has a 500MHz processor and 256MB of RAM. Having this type of power under the hood allows for video playback, but it isn’t exactly enough to be considered extremely fast. The touchscreen is responsive, but the OS seems to lag behind at times.

The Dash runs Chumby OS with a custom Linux build. Now not many people have heard of a Chumby OS. I know that I had never heard mention of it before, but it is simply a Flash runtime that features Chumby widgets that Sony calls Dash Apps. There are over 1,000 Dash Apps. Now, with the Linux side of things, Sony added the capabilities to utilize Bravia Internet Video Streaming that allows for apps from Netflix, Pandora, Slacker, Amazon Video On Demand, YouTube, and a variety of other providers.

The Sony Dash is being called “an amped up alarm clock” by reviewers at engadget, and honestly in comparison with Apple’s iPad, that’s really all it is. Every action is easier to perform on the iPad, especially since the iPad has the option of using an external keyboard. Also the fact that the iPad is portable gives it a huge up on the Dash, and the iPad’s OS doesn’t lag behind. Now, it is $300 more that the Sony Dash, so that is something to definitely consider.

So it is your decision whether or not you think the Dash meets your needs. It’s only $200, and it does perform a decent amount of satisfactory actions. It’s an interesting approach to the tablet industry by Sony, but I think that they will most definitely do better with the Dash once they install battery capabilities. HP Recalls Thousands of Laptops

Hewlett Packard has announced that it's recalling 54,000 laptop batteries. The lithium-ion batteries could possibly overheat and catch on fire. The batteries, which were made in China, came with laptops purchased both in stores and online from August 2007 to July 2008. Many were also sold independently.

According to HP, less than 3% of the laptops have the defective batteries and they company will replace them for free. The batteries can burn someone or catch on fire. The company released a statement saying, "HP fully stands behind the products it makes and has taken a proactive approach to this situation to ensure the safety of our customers and the integrity and quality of our products."

In May of last year the company recalled 70,000 laptop batteries, due to overheating, but the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that more batteries than originally thought were overheating. The recall spans over 31 different brands of computers. Initially, two different consumers complained but later an additional 38 complaints were filed by people injured by handling the batteries and laptops.

HP is not alone in recalling laptop batteries. Over 10 million Sony batteries were recalled between 2006 and 2008. 4 million of those were recalled by Dell, 1.8 million by Apple, 340,000 by Toshiba and 338,000 by Fujitsu. Lenovo, Acer, Sharpy and Sanyo also recalled their laptops. According to Consumer Product Safety Commission spokesman Scott Wolfson, said that almost any laptop battery can overheat if charged too long or if laptops don't have good ventilation systems.

If your laptop battery has been recalled and you ned a temporary back-up, why not consider a laptop rental?

Netbook or iPad: Which Do You Prefer?

CNET decided to ask its readers which they prefer: an iPad or a Netbook. According to the results, those who favorite netbooks did so for practical reasons, while those who preferred an iPad cited media-viewing capabilities and other novelties. Netbooks seemed to be the most favored. As the article points out iPads are newer and aren't exactly like traditional computers. So, whether or not the match-up is fair, is questionable.

However, most people are probably going to own either, but not both. Due to their size and ease of carrying, both are handy for travel or working on the go. And as CNET points out, neither one is exactly a laptop and neither one is exactly a smartphone. When the results were tallied, CNET posted some of the pros for each device. Here's a quick look at what all they found.

Netbooks:

Netbooks were seen as "cheap" and "simple" compared to their Apple counterparts. As one participant said, "...while the iPad is interesting, I don't see it filling a need for cheap, simple computers, which can do everything."

Netbooks were also popular because the offer full keyboards and the ability to multi-task. A more tech-savvy reader stated that "app restrictions" at Apple make the iPad less open than a Windows-loaded netbook. One musician stated that USB and more driver support makes the netbook more appealing for him, and some readers would choose the netbook just because they are PC loyalists.

iPads:

On the other side of the not-quite-a-phone, not-quite-a-computer device debate, some say the virtual keyboard works fine and that features like predictive spell-checking and 45-degree angle tilt help them type faster than they would on a regular keyboard. Some stated that maps are easier to follow on the iPad screen, and other insisted the iPad is better for travel due to its lighter weight and ease-of-use when looking for entertainment.

Many people cited various app-related pros for the Apple device and some say people just haven't given the iPad a try yet. As one reader put it, "...The iPad is different from a Netbook. Neither are appropriate for real computer work, but for using the Internet, mail, games, and/or light computing, the iPad is the better choice."

For more information on which device CNET readers prefer, check out iPad or Netbook?

The New Kno Tablet

On Wednesday at D: All Things Digital another tablet made an appearance. This tablet is going to be targeted mainly at students and should be launched at the end of the year. It is being called the Kno.

The Kno is a touch-based device running on a Linux operating system. It is comprised of 14-inch dual screens with each screen featuring 1440 x 900 IPS display. It weighs about 5.5 pounds and has up to 6 to 8 hours of battery life. This amount of battery life may seem impossible for a dual screened tablet, but the CEO of Kno, Osman Rashid, said that each screen will have their own battery pack.

The Web-based operating system that the Kno will run on has been specifically designed around the use of touch. Rashid said, "We are not going to try to retrofit something, we are going to build it from scratch."

Kno is based in Santa Clara, California. It has 90 employees that have been working on the Kno tablet for about a year now.

As I said before, Rashid is targeting the Kno at students. He doesn’t feel that it will replace a laptop, but that it is a much more portable device to bring to class. He said, "We believe the laptop is becoming the new desktop," he said. "It is going to stay in your dorm or in your home. This is all you need to carry around."

Kno has not yet settled on a price for the tablet, but they are certain that they want it to cost well under $1,000. It will be interesting to see more details about the Kno as its release date draws nearer.

Asus to Launch EEE Pad Tablet in July

Asus has announced its EEE Pad tablet recently and the Taiwan-based company is now going to launch the device at the Computex Taipei, an international information technology show held every year in the Taiwan capital, in July. It is considered to be a competitor for Apple’s Ipad.

Asus EEE Pad is expected to come to the market in the third quarter of the year. Reports in the media suggest that the device will provide more functionality than Ipad. Among many features, EEE Pad will have USB ports, webcam and support Adobe Flash- the features that are unavailable in Ipad. It will use Tegra chip made by Nvidia and could come with a price tag of around $500.

Asus’ local rival, MSI (Micro Star International), is also going to launch its own tablet device named ‘M Pad’ this year. So, it seems that Apple’s Ipad would face some stiff competition in the months to come. However, everything depends on how EEE Pad or M Pad performs, but given the success of Asus and MSI in the netbook market, you can not rule out the possibility that they would enjoy the same success in the tablet market too.

Toshiba Introduces Satellite E205 Netbook with Wireless Connectivity to TV

Can you imagine that you can connect your laptop with your television without having to use any wire? Well, that is now very possible as Toshiba has come up with Satellite E205 laptop which can be connected to a full HD television wirelessly. That is possible because the 14-inch notebook features Intel wireless technology which is called wi-di.

Powered by 2.2 Core i5 processor, Toshiba Satellite E205 has a memory of 4GB. The laptop weighs 5.2 pounds which make you think that it is not good for portability, but its 1.2 inches width could make you think otherwise. It also provides a backlit keyboard. Using a Netgear Push2TV adapter, the E205 would let you connect your laptop with your television without losing the image quality. There could just be a delay of 2 seconds, but that would not make a big difference. So, it is ideal for entertainment as well as for power point presentation. On the television, you will get 720p resolution.

There is no big drawback in the notebook except that it would provide good gaming experience and the mouse buttons are a bit stiff. It comes with a price tag of $999 which seems to be a little bit higher.

Sony Dash Introduced in the US Market

Just imagine that after waking up in the morning, you have access to your e-mail, Twitter and news sites sitting on your bed in your tiny alarm clock. That sounds great, is not it? Well, now you do not need to imagine it because it is now possible in reality thanks to Sony Dash, but for that you need to spend $199.

Sony Dash is a small device that you can think as a smart alarm clock which not only wakes you up, but also opens up a new world to you. You do not need to open your laptop to check the e-mails to download your favorite TV serials or music. All are now available at your finger tip. The touchscreen device has a 7-inch display that gives you a comfortable viewing.

Sony unveiled the device for the first time in CES 2010 where it grabbed the attention of the people and many were inquiring when it will hit the market. The good news for the US technology enthusiasts is that Sony Dash is now available in the US.

With Sony Dash, you can download TV serials, videos and music from the websites like YouTube, Netflix, Pandora etc. Moreover, the device has the multi-tasking capability. That means, you can run two applications at the same time. You can check the news sites while playing your favorite music in the background. From Sony Dash official website, I am sharing a part of the press release of the product with you here:

With Dash, a playlist of your own personalized internet world is constantly refreshed and pushed to you, reducing the need to search for your favorite content or to log onto your favorite sites. Dash also allows you to “wake up a whole new way” with music videos, internet radio, or any video content available on the Dash instead of a traditional alarm clock buzzer.

Further, Dash can multitask. For example, if used on a kitchen countertop, internet radio can be playing in the background while you use your Dash to follow a recipe step-by-step.

Adding to Dash’s impressive content offerings, CNBC(TM) and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia will each be offering apps for the Dash, displaying business news and market information as well as enabling you to access the highest quality simple recipes. In addition, Dr. Oz will provide a series of video health tips for Dash users.

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia’s app for the Sony Dash, titled “Dinner Tonight(TM) Recipe of the Day,” will come pre-loaded on the device and will provide a daily recipe from Martha Stewart’s vast library of Everyday Food magazine recipes consisting of eight ingredients or less, as well as allow you the ability to utilize any of the daily “Dinner Tonight” recipes from the past month.

CNBC’s app will also be pre-loaded in the Sony Dash and will feature real-time financial and business news, market information, stocks to watch, and more.

The video health tips provided by Dr. Oz are especially well suited for your wake-up experience. Each video is approximately one minute in length and provides specific steps you can take to live a healthier life.

In the coming weeks, Dash will be highlighted on several national broadcasts including Dr. Oz, Martha Stewart, CNBC, as well as in music videos from several high-profile Sony Music(TM) artists.

HP Closed down Windows 7 Tablet Project

HP was all set to come up with its Windows 7 touch-screen tablet. It introduced the device in CES 2010 show. Moreover, the company released a number of trailers for the product besides its specs and release dates. However, now it seems that HP has come out of this project as it found out that the Windows 7 operating system does not work well with touch-screen device.

Speculations also suggest that the computer maker would not feature Intel chip as it consumes large amount of power. So, it seems that HP would use chips produced by Qualcomm.

HP may have given up the Windows 7 tablet project, but the company is believed to be working on a WebOS tablet project which could feature Google’s Chrome operating system. However, nothing is official yet as HP has not announced anything officially.

Keyboard is comfortable to type in and the mouse track is also pretty much satisfactory. It comes with a built-in webcam. It has wireless and Ethernet port, but the netbook does not feature Bluetooth. More importantly, it does not have any HDMI port which would curtail your multimedia options and it does not feature any optical drive.

Anyway, the strongest side of the laptop is its design. Its red color glossy finish would attract the fashionable users. However, its over $500 price tag could be a drawback because for a netbook the price is little bit high.

Asus Eee PC 1215N to Feature Dual Core Atom CPU and NVIDIA Optimus Technology

Reports available in the media suggest that Taiwan-based computer maker Acer is going to launch a 13-inch netbook featuring a dual-core Atom CPU and NVIDIA ION 2 GPU. It seems that the features will affect its battery back up, but the reality is that the laptop will not affect the battery back up as it will feature NVIDIA Optimus technology.

In this way, Asus Eee PC 1215N netbook can meet the demand of different users. Firstly, it is proving a dual-core processor which will be able to do multi-tasking works. Secondly, its NVIDIA graphics card will ensure that users can run HD movie or other HD content smoothly. The specialty of Eee 1215N is that it is offering both the features without consuming much power which is rarely possible among the currently available netbooks.

The netbook is expected to be available in the market by May 13, 2010. However, nothing has been revealed about its price tag. Netbooks are generally priced at below $500, but given the features of Asus Eee 1215N, it seems that the netbook would cost you a bit high.

AMD to Unveil Power Efficient New Processor Very Soon

In its bid to gain more market share in the consumer market, AMD is now all set to launch a new set of processors which will not be power hungry and provide better battery back up for the laptops. In fact, AMD would install the new processors in 109 different laptop models this year. So, it is clear that AMD’s performance this year would be far better than the last year when it could install its processors only in 40 laptop models.

Well, that does not mean that AMD has come close to its rival Intel which has a whopping 87.8% share in the chipset market in the first quarter of the year. AMD, on the other hand, holds only 12.1% of the market share. Still, one can say that AMD is trying its best to push more into the processor market. However, while AMD is trying to make more space in the consumer CPU market, it is losing its hold in the served-based processor market where Intel is dominating with full swing.

AMD may see better performance this year, but one thing is true that the American company needs to do more to get to reach even close to Intel which is in terms of market share is the best chipset maker in the world now. To minimize the gap, AMD’s R&D department should come up with cutting-edge technology for the users.

Asus Eee PC 1015P and 1015PE with 13.5-hour Battery Life Announced

Asus has added two new netbooks to its popular Eee PC line up. The two 10.1-inch netbooks: Asus Eee PC 1015P and Eee PC 1015PE- come from its Seashell family, featuring Intel Pine Trail processors. Asus claims that both the netbooks will come with 13.5-hour battery back up. No doubt, this would be the most attractive feature of the two netbooks. Let us see what the two netbooks feature:

Display

Eee PC 1015P and 1015PE feature 10.1-inch LED Backlight WSVGA screen with 1024x600 pixel resolution. Users are more likely to enjoy a satisfactory viewing experience, compared to other netbooks with same size display.

Processor

Both the netbooks feature Intel Atom Pine View-M N450 1.66GHz processor which is capable of preserving battery life. Pine View platform is Intel’s latest for the netbooks and N450 is perhaps one of the best in the Atom line up.

RAM and Hard Disk Drive (HDD)

Users have the choice between 1GB or 2GB DDR2 memory for the two netbook models. When it comes to storage, users have 3 options: 160GB, 250GB and 320GB- alongside 500GB Asus web storage.

Graphics

Both the netbooks will feature integrated graphics from Intel. Well, the integrated graphics may not be best of the graphics, but still it is for netbook which users should not any complain about.

Keyboard

Keyboard is another attractive feature of the two new netbooks. Generally, netbook keboards are not very comfortable for typing because of the small size of the keys. However, the Eee PC 1015P and 1015PE feature relatively large keys that users would find very comfortable to type. Unlike predecessor Eee PC 1005PE-P which features island style keys, the new Eee PC models come with keyboard where keys are lying at the base.

Operating System, Network and Ports

Asus features Windows 7 starter edition for both the Eee PC 1015P and 1015PE netbooks. For network and communication, the netbooks have Wi-Fi 802.11n, LAN port, Bluetooth 2.1 and VGA port. Among other features include 0.3 megapixel webcam, 3 USB 2.0 ports, headphone and microphone jacks and multi card reader. Asus also features stereo speakers with Hi-Definition Audio CODEC for entertainment.

Battery

The biggest attraction is six-cell 63Wh battery which ensures, as Asus claims, 13.5-hour of battery back up. That means, the battery charge will last for a full working day. So, users can carry either of the two models without worrying about the netbook charge.

Overall, there is no difference between Asus Eee PC 1015P and 1015PE in terms of features, except two differences in terms of color and design. Asus is yet to announce the launch date and prices of the two new Eee PC netbooks.
